Alex Garland: Career In Four Minutes
Ex Machina is the latest film from Alex Garland, the author turned filmmaker who has been the creative force behind some of the most inventive films of recent years.
Since his book, The Beach, was filmed by Danny Boyle, Garland has been quietly creating some of the catchiest movie premises around, from sprinting zombies (28 Days Later) to a mission to reignite a dying sun (Sunshine). Never short of compelling ideas, Ex Machina is jam-packed full of them.
Starring Alicia Vikander as AI Ava, the film sees programmer Caleb (Star Wars’ Domhnall Gleeson) brought in to test the creation of Nathan (Star Wars’ Oscar Isaac). A tense cat-and-mouse thriller bound to inspire endless pub debates, it’s set the bar for sci-fi high in 2015. Read our five-star Ex Machina review..
Garland recently sat down with Total Film to take us through his career in just four minutes, covering off everything from Never Let Me Go, to Dredd, and plenty more besides.

Bucket-list-ticking career highlights have included reporting from the set of Tenet and Avengers: Infinity War, as well as covering Comic-Con, TIFF and the Sundance Film Festival.
