Not a fan of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare? Well, you're not alone. During its most recent earnings report, Activision said that the game didn't meet sales expectations, and that it "didn't resonate" with series fans. The company hopes to change that later this year, with a new game that "will take Call of Duty back to its roots."
Now, that might sound like Activision is panicking and reversing course from Infinite Warfare, but keep in mind that whatever will be shown this year was started two years ago. But in any case, Activision would like us all to know they've learned from the experience.
"While [Infinite Warfare] wasn't the success we planned, it allows us to protect the core tenets of our culture that [CEO] Bobby [Kotick] discussed: empowering our talented teams to have the chance to pursue opportunities that they are passionate about. Providing an environment that recognizes passion is a critical component of our success, and a process to learn from our mistakes is what makes our company special."
You might recall that Sledgehammer Games (the studio that's up next in the CoD developer rotation) made a Happy New Year tweet that sent fans into a speculative tizzy thanks to its use of clockwork gears in its visuals. And just this week, studio head Glen Schofield tweeted this:

So whatever's going on, hopefully we'll find out more soon. If Activision is being literal about CoD getting back to its roots, we could see a WW2-era story from Sledgehammer later this year. If Activision is being more figurative, well, who knows. Which would you prefer?
