Abrams talks Trek
JJ promises his Star Trek “ …won’t be like anything you’ve seen before.”
One man who’s definitely not taken any shrapnel from the fallout of Mission: Impossible 3 is workaholic helmer JJ Abrams.
The lenser walked straight from the crash and bang of the M:I 3 set into the directing job on the eleventh Star Trek flick – a dream come true for the proud Trekkie – so surely he bit Paramount’s hand off when they offered him the opportunity of resurrecting the franchise… right?
“Not exactly,” Abrams told America’s TV Guide. “There have been 10 films and all these different series, so it was a question of finding out what they were anticipating. But it became clear pretty quickly that they were in a really open frame of mind. Then it became, ‘Hell, yeah!’”
Since then, the rumblings around Hollywood have been about how Abrams intends to approach the movie from a ‘Star Trek Begins’ angle, showing how Mr Spock and Captain Kirk first meet. Unfortunately, the helmer was in no mood to give away whether his flick will even include the pointy-eared logical one or his suave, alien arse-kicking captain.
“It's way premature. Anything I say, people will read into it and make assumptions. But we have an incredible beginning of a really dramatic story, and it very much honours the canon of Star Trek. On the other hand, it won't be like anything you've seen before.”
So when can we expect JJ’s juicy slice of Star Trek at our local cinema?
“Well, we're in the middle of breaking the story, and it's coming along great. I'd be happy to start sooner than Paramount thinks, but not a moment before it's ready.”
