Two of Catherine Breillat's earlier films, Une Vraie Jeune Fille and 36 Fillette, dealt uncompromisingly with female adolescent sexuality, and the director returns to this subject with her latest effort. A Ma Soeur! focuses on two sisters, the beautiful Elena (Roxane Mesquida) and her frumpy sibling Anaïs (Anaïs Reboux), and the former's relationship with charming Italian student Fernando (Libero De Rienzo), a smooth talker who knows exactly what he wants.
The film is difficult viewing as there are no sympathetic characters, and Breillat's emphasis on the banality of the girls' lives does nothing but make events thoroughly tedious. This is despite some explicit and disturbing nudity, which only seems to be included because, after the fuss over her last film, Romance, Breillat wishes to hold onto her reputation for being 'controversial' and 'daring'. As Reboux sings, "I'm so bored..."
