A first look at The Fighter
Mark Wahlberg gets punchy, Christian Bale gets gaunt…
The first images have arrived for David O Russell's latest, The Fighter.
Originally developed by Darren Aronofsky and planned for Matt Damon and Mark Wahlberg, the film's been through the wringer with financial and script worries and Damon dropping out with a possible Brad Pitt replacement never working out.
Aronofsky himself left the film in April, with Russell taking over for the tale of Boston boxer "Irish" Mickey Ward (Wahlberg) and his trainer/former fighter-turned-druggie Dicky Eklund (Christian Bale), plus Amy Adams as the woman Mickey falls for.
And it looks like Bale has gone with one of his typically tough approaches to the role, dropping the weight to look like someone who has been through years of drug abuse.
We're intrigued to see how David O Russell handles this one - and to discover if any stories emerged from the set between the notoriously argumentative director and the man still best known for his abusive freak-out on Terminator Salvation...
