50 Greatest Mondo Posters

The Thing (1982)

The Poster: A black-and-white ensemble that oozes atmosphere. Sparing flourishes of red add depth and drama.

Coolest Detail: Kurt Russell’s hardened hero, of course, armed to the hilt for a clash with an otherworldly nasty.

A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987)

The Poster: Inspired by a scene from the better-than-usual threequel in which Freddy takes down a drug abuser by injecting her with his pointier-than-ever fingers.

Coolest Detail: The needle fingers, a witty departure from Krueger’s usual razor-glove that chimes with the film’s hospital setting.

The Evil Dead (1981)

The Poster: Dutch-angled block art that perfectly encapsulates the bare-bone approach of Sam Raimi’s classic chiller.

Coolest Detail: The tree's branches look like veins. Nifty.

Hellraiser (1987)

The Poster: Pinhead takes pride of place in a Gothic concept that sort of looks like a playing card – fitting considering the hellish games at play in Clive Barker’s grisly horror.

Coolest Detail: The chains hanging menacingly by Pinhead’s bonce.

Transformers: Dark Of The Moon (2011)

The Poster: Somehow turns something by Michael Bay into viable art that any collector would be proud to hang in their study.

Coolest Detail: The number three at the bottom, just in case we forgot this was a threequel.

Monster Squad (1987)

The Poster: A jigsaw puzzle of all the characters from this monsters-gone-wild classic.

Coolest Detail: The monsters get pride of place at the top, with the quartet of Wolfman, Dracula, Gill-man and The Mummy getting the spotlight treatment.

Kill Bill (2003)

The Poster: Manages to find space to cram in every one of the important characters in both Kill Bill volumes, resolving them artfully into an Eastern-spiced illustration.

Coolest Detail: The blood-splattered ‘Kill Bill’ emblem, which looks like it’s just been savaged by The Bride.

Maniac (1980)

The Poster: All this one needs to do for impact is show off Joe Spinell as splatter-loving serial killer Frank Zito. Quite an achievement.

Coolest Detail: It looks like a manic carved out the film’s title…

Star Wars: Episode VI Return Of The Jedi (1983)

The Poster: A staggering achievement, stitching in all the key Star Wars players – including an AT-AT and several storm troopers.

Coolest Detail: The Emperor’s in there twice, sitting in a throne under his own massive gawping head. Also, Alec Guinness!

Cronos (1993)

The Poster: Revelling in portraiture, and a subdued homage to Guillermo del Toro’s horror.

Coolest Detail: The clockwork in the background – del Toro would approve.
