The Movie: Sandra Bullock and George Clooney are the astronauts spun around by Alfonso Cuaron's bravura, floating camera in a spiritual survival flick that proves that, while in space nobody can hear you scream, you can certainly hear the audience gasp.
Impact: Cuaron spent seven years perfecting the technology, and it paid off with cinema's best use of 3D since Avatar. The result was the year's biggest non-franchise hit, proving that the blockbuster's horizons aren't confined to superheroes.
