4K 120Hz TV Black Friday deals 2024: what to expect during this year's sale

Black Friday 4K 120HZ TV deals

4K 120Hz TV Black Friday deals will arrive in just a couple of weeks, just in time for the PS5 Pro launch. That's important, as if you're planning on picking up Sony's souped-up console, chances are you're going to want a faster UHD panel if you don't have one. While you'll ideally want to wait for the main event for the lowest prices, I've been keeping tabs on early offers for those of you looking to get set up in advance.

The best gaming TV space is ever-shifting, and the current frontrunner is the LG OLED G4. The flagship display can easily provide your PS5 or Xbox Series X with 120Hz, all while ramping things up to 144Hz for players who need extra speed. While we're hoping that model will show up among other Black Friday gaming deals, there are now more than a few alternatives that can match those specs like the Hisense U7N - albeit with less impressive colors and contrast.

Naturally, your milage will vary in terms of price when it comes to 120Hz 4K TV deals. The resolution and refresh rate combo is still considered a premium feature, and most budget options are going to stick with 60Hz. You'll also have a whole load of 144Hz options to consider this year, adding another layer of choice for players looking to play PC games or futureproof their setup. That said, we're confident we can find you a display for under $500 during Black Friday 2024, so you'll want to stick with us if you're trying to keep costs down.

4K 120Hz Black Friday TV deals: What do we expect

LG OLED G4 with game hub menu active and Overwatch 2 gameplay on display

(Image credit: Future / Phil Hayton)

Let's kick off the discussion with mid-range TV deals, as the majority of you out there will be looking to spend under $1,000. We can do one better than that, as we stumbled across an 55-inch 144Hz Hisense U7K last year for just $479.99 at Best Buy. TCL rose to that challenge by slashing its Q7 display down from $999.99 to $648, which is a fantastic price considering it applied to the 65-inch version.

If you're hellbent on picking up an OLED TV for less, you'll want to keep a close eye on the LG OLED B3. Now that the new B4 is available, the 120Hz screen should drop lower than last year, beating its previous $999.99 Black Friday offer. Those of you willing to spend a bit more should also keep the LG OLED C3 in mind, as it's about time it dropped to an all new record low.

Of course, those of you who already know they're picking up the LG OLED G4 this year will want to wait for the sale. When the time comes, you might be tempted to go for the older OLED G3 model, and if the price is just right, doing so could be a wiser move. That's dependant on if stock actually sticks around till November, but if we see any incredible clearance offers, we'll be sure to let you know.

What you will want to be wary of is TV's showing up with a faux 120Hz mode. This can happen when specifically using search bars to find higher refresh rate models, as some panels use tricks to simulate the effect of faster speeds. Each brand will use its own terminology for the feature, with Sony traditionally calling it "Motionflow", but it effectively uses techniques that can come with latency caveats. Simply put, you won't be using a native 120Hz display in these instances, which isn't ideal for gaming.

Some TVs also trade resolution to achieve 120Hz, meaning they step down from 4K to 1080p. This might actually be a decent option for anyone playing Overwatch 2 on PS5 or Xbox Series X since the game itself dips to 1440p and scales back up to UHD to hit 120fps. You will absolutely notice a difference in terms of fidelity, but considering these models can come in at under $300, it could be a way to save money.

Should you wait for the 4K 120Hz TV Black Friday deals?

You don't necessarily have to wait right until November if you see a great offer today. Of course, the likelihood is that there will be more chances than at any other point in the year to get a cracking deal during Black Friday. You will often find retailers and manufacturers going early in November with their deals, spreading them over a longer period of time nowadays, so your time to strike could come early. It's all dependant on whether you are happy to wait until November 2024 to save some cash, or would prefer to take the plunge now and enjoy the benefits.

Do 4K 120Hz TV prices drop on Black Friday?

Not only do we see almost all TV prices drop during Black Friday (slight exaggeration but you know what I mean), we're going to see some of them – like the 4K 120Hz beasts – drop the hardest. These are going to be some of the best price drops going as it's a spec that's rapidly become the norm over the past couple of years, and those most premium TVs that throw in loads of other bells and whistles will drop the hardest.

Is 120Hz needed for PS5?

You don't need an 120Hz TV to play PS5, but pairing the new gen console with a high refresh screen will unlock its potential. In supported games like Overwatch 2, you'll be able to experience faster, more responsive visuals with a high frame rate to boot. However, keep in mind that only selected releases support 120Hz, and many PS5 games reduce resolution to 1440p to boost fps.

Why are 120Hz TVs so expensive?

High refresh screens normally cost substantially more than their 60Hz counterparts, and that's largely because they're more expensive to produce. That's not to say you can't pick up an 120Hz screen for less, but you'll normally end up having to trade away other specs to keep prices low.

Is 60Hz vs 120Hz noticeable?

Most players will notice a difference between 60Hz and 120Hz. Displays with a latter refresh rate update on screen frames twice as fast compared to conventional models, which matters if you're playing games with a higher frame rate. If you're into competitive shooters, this will make all the difference, as your movement will feel more responsive as a result.

I’ve been messing around with PCs, video game consoles, and tech since before I could speak. Don’t get me wrong, I kickstarted my relationship with technology by jamming a Hot Wheels double-decker bus into my parent’s VCR, but we all have to start somewhere. I even somehow managed to become a walking, talking buyer’s guide at my teenage supermarket job, which helped me accept my career fate. So, rather than try to realise my musician dreams, or see out my University degree, I started running my own retro pop culture site and writing about video games and tech for the likes of TechRadar, The Daily Star, and the BBC before eventually ending up with a job covering graphics card shenanigans at PCGamesN.
