30 Awesome Movie Weddings

Mamma Mia! (2008)

The Happy Couple: Donna Sheridan (Meryl Streep) and Sam Carmichael (Pierce Brosnan).

The Wedding: Complicated. This is supposed to be the wedding of Donna’s daughter Sophie (Amanda Seyfried). But when she decides to postpone, it’s her mum and old flame Sam who step in. Music by Abba.

If They Get Divorced: Donna is aghast to learn that Sam is more of a Sex Pistols kind of guy. But she should’ve guessed by the fact he’s tone-deaf.

The Little Mermaid (1989)

The Happy Couple: Princess Ariel (Jodi Benson) and Eric (Christopher Daniel Barnes).

The Wedding: Diplomatically set on a ship, so that Ariel’s mer-people can attend. Naturally, King Triton creates a rainbow to give them a proper Disney send-off.

If They Get Divorced: We assume Ariel be turned back into a mermaid – or is she stuck that way?

Very Bad Things (1998)

The Happy Couple: Kyle Fisher (Jon Favreau) and Laura Garrety (Cameron Diaz).

The Wedding: Something of a cover-up, with the corpses piling up after Kyle’s disastrous stag do and main offender Boyd (Christian Slater) offed during the reception.

If They Get Divorced: Laura will have to face some pretty judgemental stares for trying to ditch her now-disabled hubby.

Bride Wars (2009)

The Happy Couples: Olivia ‘Liv' Lerner (Kate Hudson) and Daniel Wiliams (Steve Howey), and Emma Allen (Anne Hathaway) and Fletcher Flemson (Chris Pratt).

The Wedding: Weeks of hostility between the brides about getting hitched in the same building on the same day flare up into a full-on cat-fight in front of the assembled guests.

If They Get Divorced: Although only Liv and Daniel go through with it, we wouldn’t be surprised if she eventually ditched him for Emma. All that aggression’s got to be compensating for something, right?

The Palm Beach Story (1942)

The Happy Couple: Geraldine ‘Gerry’ Jeffers (Claudette Colbert) and Tom Jeffers (Joel McCrea).

The Wedding: A fraught affair, as Tom and Gerry apparently escape from being tied up in order to get to the church on time.

If They Get Divorced: They should probably give it a while before signing the papers. Say, the time it takes to travel to Palm Beach.

Love Actually (2003)

The Happy Couple: Juliet (Keira Knightley) and Peter (Chiwetel Ejiofor).

The Wedding: Soppy, as best man Mark (Andrew Lincoln) organises a Flashmob orchestra to play 'All You Need Is Love.'

If They Get Divorced: It'll be because Peter discovers why Mark really went to all that trouble.

Monsoon Wedding (2001)

The Happy Couple: Aditi Verma (Vasunhara Das) and Hemant Rai (Parvin Dabas).

The Wedding: Arranged, as much in terms of the scale of the thing as in the fact bride and groom have only just met . Yet not even the rain can dampen the urge to dance.

If They Get Divorced: The weather's sense of irony will ensure that the sun is shining that day.

27 Dresses (2008)

The Happy Couple: Perennial bridesmaid Jane Nichols (Katherine Heigl) and Kevin Doyle (James Marsden).

The Wedding: A cross between therapy and torture, as Jane forces all 27 of the brides she had been a bridesmaid for to return the favour by putting on the frocks they made her wear.

If They Get Divorced: Kevin will end up with thirteen-and-a-half dresses he probably doesn’t want.

Seven Brides For Seven Brothers (1954)

The Happy Couples: Seriously, you think we're going to list all of them?

The Wedding: Shotgun. Let's face it, since these girls are only contemplating marriage because they're suffering from Stockholm Syndrome after getting kidnapped, the lads have to seal the deal quickly.

If They Get Divorced: A bumper payday for the lawyers.

Father Of The Bride (1991)

The Happy Couple: Annie Banks (Kimberly Williams) and Bryan MacKenzie (George Newbern).

The Wedding: Difficult to say who’s the biggest nuisance – wedding planner Franck (Martin Short) or Annie’s overly-protective pa George (Steve Martin).

If They Get Divorced: Bryan’s lawyers cite irreconcilable father-in-law issues after even a restraining order won’t keep George away.
