16 Best Films You Might Have Missed in 2012
2012's hidden gems...
Like Crazy
Essentially this year’s Blue Valentine , Like Crazy ’s deconstruction of the long distance relationship is similarly realistic and powerful.
Featuring stand-out turns from stars Felicity Jones and Anton Yelchin, with electric support from Jennifer Lawrence, this is the best love story you didn’t see this year.
Like Crazy is available on DVD and Blu-ray.

Corman's World: Exploits Of A Hollywood Rebel
Roger Corman is one of the most influential filmmakers of the modern age. He’s helped launch the careers of the likes of Martin Scorsese, Jack Nicholson, James Cameron, Robert De Niro and Dennis Hopper.
Not bad for the man who was also responsible for Attack Of The Crab Monsters , Teenage Cave Man and Sharktopus .

Rampart
A career-best performance from an actor whose career is littered with incredible turns, Woody Harrelson’s corrupt cop Dave Brown is so incendiary it burns its image to your TV screen like a nuclear shadow.
We’re not necessarily saying you’ll completely enjoy this one, but you won’t be able to take your eyes away from it.
Rampart is available on DVD and Blu-ray.

Michael
Extremely dark and disturbing, Michael is the story of a suburban paedophile who abducts a 10-year-old boy in order to have a ‘normal’ domestic relationship.
He cooks the boy dinner, watches TV with him, visits the zoo – normal activities that have an incredibly chilling undercurrent in context.
It’s fairly obvious why this one didn’t set the box office alight, but Michael Haneke fans will find plenty to admire here.
Michael is available on DVD and Blu-ray.

Once Upon A Time In Anatolia
‘A group of men journey into the night to search for a buried corpse’ sounds like the sort of pitch Guy Ritchie would scribble on the back of a napkin, but Nuri Bilge Ceylan weaves this simple premise into a mediation on life, death and existence itself.
A barren, beautiful film.
Once Upon A Time In Anatolia is available on DVD and Blu-ray.

Wild Bill
Glance at the cast list – Jaime Winstone, Sean Pertwee, Jason Flemyng, Neil Maskell – and the concept (ex-con returns home / tries to avoid a life of crime), and you’d be forgiven for thinking that Wild Bill is just another piece of Brit-gangster nonsense.
But that would be an injustice to a very special film.
Quirky, absorbing, rich and hugely enjoyable – we’d advise joining Bill’s family as soon as possible.
WIld Bill is available on DVD and Blu-ray.

God Bless America
Essentially a furious stand-up routine railing against the modern world turned into a film that follows a middle-aged man and a teenage girl going on a murder rampage.
Their victims? People who epitomise the very worst of modern society.
Dark satire at its finest, it’s Natural Born Killers meets Kick-Ass scripted by the ghost of Bill Hicks.
Exactly as brilliant as that sounds.
God Bless America is available on DVD and Blu-ray.

Everything Or Nothing: The Story Of 007
Bond was back in a big way in 2012, celebrating the 50th anniversary in style, with one of the best films in the franchise’s history.
And we’re not talking about Skyfall .
Utterly comprehensive, this complete history features contributions from every single Bond (including Lazenby) and Christopher Lee remembering not just his experiences making The Man With The Golden Gun , but the time he spent in a WW2 fighting force that may have provided Ian Fleming’s (Lee’s cousin) inspiration to create 007 in the first place.
Everything Or Nothing: The Story Of 007 is available on DVD and Blu-ray.

The Innkeepers
Ti West’s follow-up to his stunning House Of The Devil is an entirely different beast.
The tension’s still present and correct, but it’s the characters you’ll fall in love with this time.
A future cult classic in the making, if you missed it at the cinema, don’t worry – it’s just as scary on the small screen.
The Innkeepers is available on DVD and Blu-ray.

[REC] Genesis
Bold and brave, [ REC] Genesis dared to do something different with the found footage format in 2012.
Watching it, we can’t help but wonder how much the likes of Paranormal Activity might be improved by mimicking Genesis ’ innovation.
But even if you’re not a fan of the format-shift that occurs in the first act, one thing’s for sure, you’ll be shocked by the events of the third.
[REC] Genesis is available on DVD and Blu-ray.
