14 ways to win at StarCraft II
Can't tell your Zergling from your Zealot? We'll guide you from newbie to master
Queen
√ Best used to scurry around an expansion base, lobbing down creep tumours to keep prying Marines away.
x Any massed force can take down a Queen with a lot of micromanagement.
Zergling
√ You get two per larva, meaning they’re a good investment against Marines or Zealots.
x The flame-chucking Hellion burns Zerglings like horrible insectoid-baby kindling.
Baneling
√ Bursts explosively on impact, killing all Marines and Zealots dead.
x Ultra-flimsy, a single rogue laser will pierce its carapace. The Protoss Stalker and Immortal are ideal counters.
Hydralisk
√ The Zerg’s ranged unit of choice, groups of them perfect for taking down Battlecruisers and Void Rays.
x Zealots and Zerglings can get in close, negating the Hydralisk’s long-range spines.
Overseer
√ A floaty detector balloon used to spot enemy units, even if they’re cloaked or burrowed.
x A big floating sack of goo, it’s not the strongest unit in the face of anti-air defences.
Roach
√ A spiky, acid-gobbing assault bug with strong armour.
x Marauder grenades slow onrushing Roaches, leaving other units free to pepper them with bullets.
Mutalisk
√ Best facing downward, aiming its spines at Zealots and Immortals.
x A bunker full of Marines will set invading Mutalisks right, knocking them from the sky. Protoss Phoenixes as well.
Corruptor
√ Can drop an unhealthy, restrictive funk on enemy buildings and shoot down Vikings and Phoenixes.
x They have no response to attacks from below, so use ground-based anti-air units.
Infestor
√ Can lob gooey sacks that dispense infected Zerg/Marine hybrids and slow enemy movement.
x Designed as a battlefield supporter for troops, it’s easily beaten by most squads.
Ultralisk
√ Can wade into an enemy base and kill everything. Best versus Marines and Zealots.
x Marauders will slow the beast’s advance with grenades, letting other units concentrate fire on its shell.
Brood Lord
√ Lobs icky Broodlings at its ground based target. Dug-in Siege Tanks suffer hugely from such an assault.
x With no anti-air weaponry, an inviting target for Vikings, Phoenixes and Corruptors.
We complete the trilogy with the Protoss on the next page.
