101 Greatest Gaming Moments: Final Day
Our top 10 gaming moments. Right here. Right now
1 Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty - 'Fission Mailed'
MGS2 almost behaves itself until its final stretch - well, apart from the roller-skating bombers, transsexual vampires and switching lead characters - but then it really goes to work on you.
Running through the innards of a massive Metal Gear in his birthday suit, hero Raiden is suddenly told by his increasingly deranged commanding officer: "Turn the game console off right now!" "You'll ruin your eyes playing so close to the TV," adds Raiden's girlfriend, helpfully.
Above: Metal Gear maestro Hideo Kojima seems to take great pleasure in messing with our heads. What a joker.
By the time the Colonel's image is flickering into a gurning skull and announcing, "I hear it's amazing when the famous purple stuffed worm in flap-jaw space with the tuning fork does a raw blink on Hari-Kiri Rock. I need scissors! 61!" It's all you can do to paw at the DualShock buttons, stumble into Solid Snake ('Infinite ammo,' he winks, pointing to his bandana - a cheat from MGS1) and an all-out gunfight with an army of shock troops. You're eventually overrun and dumped to the Mission Failed screen.
But wait, it says "Fission Mailed", and the quarter of the screen that should be zoomed in on your fallen body is still playing the game in miniature.
Not just breaking the fourth wall between you and the game but knocking the whole side of the house out, it's guaranteed to leave you as confused as its lead character; MGS2 has become a game within a game, within a game, that's somehow still taking itself deadly seriously. While also whispering "Don't worry, it's just a game". Here's to you, Hideo Kojima.
